How to choose the right pulling grip

A grip is chosen by four things: what it is for, the diameter of what it grips, the pulling force and how it is attached. This guide takes them one at a time, with the dimensions and breaking strengths from our own tables.

The grips must not be used for lifting. This applies to every model in the range.

What is the grip for?

The range is divided by task. Start with the category, then the model.

The diameter sets the size

Every model comes in several sizes, and every size has its own article number with a diameter range, shown as Ø min and Ø max in the tables. Choose the size where the diameter of the cable, pipe or wire rope falls within the range.

Example: a cable with a diameter of 30 mm fits DE002538S, which covers Ø 25.0 to 38.0 mm.

The search box in the menu does the same for you: type the diameter in millimetres and every model that covers it is listed.

The mesh length is given at nominal diameter and the eye length for an unloaded eye.

The pulling force sets the breaking strength

BS in the tables is the breaking strength in kilograms, the mean of measured breaking strengths for new, unused grips. Breaking strength varies with the material, shape and diameter of the object the grip is fitted to, and the variation can reach 25 percent. A grip is therefore only loaded with part of its breaking strength:

  • A pulling grip should never be loaded above 1/3 of BS.
  • A support grip should never be loaded above 1/5 of BS.
  • Where there is a risk of injury or damage to equipment, the safety factor must be increased further.
  • Inspect the grip visually before use.

Example: if the pull needs 1,000 kg of force, the pulling grip needs a breaking strength of at least 3,000 kg. DE002538S has a BS of 3,030 kg and is enough. In the same way, a support grip that carries 200 kg needs a breaking strength of at least 1,000 kg.

The eye and the version

The model code shows how the grip is built. The first letter is the category, followed by the eye:

  • E

Single eye. One pulling eye in line with the grip, as on DE and LE.

  • D

Double eye. Two eyes. DD suits pulling several cables at the same time.

  • S

Side eye. The strap is mounted on the side. Since the model is open, the grip can be moved along the cable and the pulling machine does not have to be moved.

  • O

Split. The mesh can be opened. DSO is closed with lacing wire and the snap-lock grip ASK with metal snap fasteners.

The exceptions are the connection grips SK and SL and the multi pulling grip DE3 for three cables.

The eye is made of soft wire rope or has a pressed thimble. Many models are available with the other option, as stated for each model. The length of a wire rope eye is set so that the unswaged eye leaves at least 15 × the wire rope diameter between the ferrule and the top of the eye.

Mesh length and material

  • DE comes with a standard or long mesh, and the two mesh lengths let the model cover a very wide range of applications.
  • KE comes in two lengths, where the longer one works well for pulling fibre optic cable.
  • Overhead line pulling grips are braided in sections of triple, double and single wire, giving a gradual transition between grip and pulling tension.
  • All A models are available galvanised or in stainless steel. Stainless grips are made with stainless wire rope, a stainless thimble (AISI 316) and copper ferrules.
  • The aramid grips do not conduct current and are gentler on the cable.

What we need in your enquiry

Diameter, material and pulling force take us a long way. It also helps to include:

  • what needs pulling, supporting or restraining
  • the diameter in millimetres
  • the pulling force or the load
  • the eye and version you want
  • the number of grips

If no standard model fits, we can modify an existing model or make a new one to your requirements.
